Every four to six months — here's why
Inland arrays can often go a year between cleanings. Coastal Orange County arrays can't, because they collect three things at once: salt spray, marine-layer mineral film, and the bird traffic that comes with living near the water.
The film builds evenly, which makes it invisible — panels never look suddenly dirty, they just quietly produce less. Owners usually spot it in their monitoring app before their roof: a slow drift down in output that recovers, sometimes strikingly, after a cleaning.
No, rain doesn't clean them
Rain rinses loose dust and that's all. It doesn't touch bonded salt film or anything biological, and in Southern California, rain itself dries into mineral spots — panels are often dirtier after a winter of light rain than before it.
There's a reason panel manufacturers specify deionized water and soft brushes for cleaning: pure water dissolves and lifts the film, then dries spot-free because there's nothing dissolved in it to leave behind. That's exactly how we clean, with no detergents and no pressure — warranty-safe by design.
What dirty panels actually cost
Industry studies put soiling losses anywhere from a few percent to well over ten in high-buildup environments — and coastal salt film is a high-buildup environment. On a typical Orange County home system, that's real money every month, silently.

Ground-level rinsing between services is fine. Roof work with hose water isn't worth the risk — tap water dries into mineral spots, and manufacturers void warranties for abrasive or detergent cleaning. If you're getting on a ladder, at least use deionized water and a soft brush.
Do you check panels while cleaning?
